Jian Cui
Project Manager
Where are you located? What geographical region(s) do you cover?
I am based in Suzhou, China, a city known for its classical gardens. I oversee clinical research projects across China, with regional coverage extending to Japan and Southeast Asia, including the Philippines and Malaysia.
How long have you been working in the area of clinical research?
I have worked in clinical research for more than 11 years. I began my career as a Clinical Research Associate in 2015 and joined the company, then known as Covance, as a CRA II in 2018. Since then, I have progressed through Senior CRA and Clinical Team Lead roles to my current position as Project Manager, overseeing projects from start to finish.
What is the best part of your job?
Clinical research is a highly planned discipline, with responsibilities and timelines carefully mapped out. This suits the way I like to work, as I genuinely enjoy bringing structure to complex projects and keeping everything organised. What I value most is bringing colleagues from different specialties together as one team, working towards a shared goal and supporting their development along the way.
What has been interesting about your work in clinical research? Did anything surprise you about the patient population?
One of the most interesting aspects of my work has been visiting study sites in different cities and collaborating directly with experienced clinical professionals across a range of therapeutic areas. These experiences have allowed me to explore new approaches and potential treatments for disease. I have also been struck by how many patients, particularly in oncology, are still young yet face serious illnesses. This reinforces why our work matters and the importance of helping better treatments reach patients sooner.
What are you most proud of in your work?
I am most proud that my work creates value for both sponsors and patients. Delivering a study successfully from start to finish depends on getting countless details right. When a trial progresses smoothly and a new treatment has the opportunity to reach patients sooner, all the effort feels worthwhile.
