Yilian Cai (Elaine)
Project Manager
Where are you located? What geographical region(s) do you cover?
I am based in Beijing, China. My current work focuses on clinical research projects within China, although I have previously supported studies across the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, New Zealand and South Korea.
How long have you been working in the area of clinical research?
I joined Fortrea in February 2017 through the first CRA Trainee Program in China, and over the past nine years I have built my career across a range of roles, progressing from CRA Trainee to CRA, Senior CRA, Clinical Team Lead, and Clinical Team Manager. I am now preparing to begin an exciting new chapter as a Project Manager.
What is the best part of your job?
What I enjoy most about my role is the opportunity to continuously learn, grow and contribute to the development of medicines that may improve patients' lives. One of the things that keeps clinical research so rewarding is that no two days are ever the same. Every study, site, and challenge presents an opportunity to learn something new. Throughout my career, I have gained experience across a wide range of therapeutic areas, including endocrinology, ophthalmology, infectious diseases, respiratory diseases, gynaecology, urology and nephrology. Along the way, I have developed not only technical experience but also leadership, project management, strategic thinking and cross-functional collaboration skills through working with teams around the world.
What has been interesting about your work in clinical research? Did anything surprise you about the patient population?
One of the most fascinating aspects of clinical research is the diversity of people and experiences it brings. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work with patients, investigators, site staff, sponsors and global study teams across many different therapeutic areas. Each study comes with its own scientific and operational challenges, which keeps the work engaging and intellectually stimulating.
What has impressed me most is the dedication and resilience of clinical trial participants. Many patients face significant health challenges, yet they willingly contribute their time and effort not only for their own treatment options but also to help advance medical science for future generations. Their commitment is a constant source of inspiration. I have also been privileged to witness the continued growth and innovation within China's clinical research ecosystem, driven by the dedication of investigators, coordinators and site teams across the country.
What are you most proud of in your work?
I am proud of the professional journey I have built through continuous learning, growth and embracing new challenges. Starting my career with limited industry experience, Fortrea has given me the opportunity to develop through hands-on project work, mentorship and collaboration with talented colleagues. Adapting successfully to different roles, from monitoring activities as a CRA to leading study teams and managing complex projects, has required ongoing learning and personal development. Those experiences have shaped me into the professional I am today and reinforced the importance of remaining curious, adaptable, and committed to growth.
What continues to motivate me is knowing that there is always another opportunity to learn and contribute. I am proud to be part of a team united by a shared purpose: helping bring innovative therapies to patients. Looking back on the past nine years, I am grateful for the opportunities, support and global perspective that Fortrea has provided, and I am excited to continue growing and contributing to the future of clinical research.
